Some Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt?
Originally Rolfing Structural Integration did have the reputation of being very painful. In recent decades there has been exponentially more understanding of how our bodies function. We now have much more sophisticated ways of working. While you may experience some moments of intense sensation or a feeling of “it hurts so good”, a session should feel wonderful. As your practitioner, I do not consider anything which causes clenching or resistance in your body to be beneficial to the process. I will ask for your feedback on the depth of pressure and quality of touch and you will always be the one in control.
Do I have to do 10 sessions?
You are welcome to come in for a single session or a short series of three either to try it out or to address a simple goal. Many of the people I work with do end up choosing to do the complete series.
Are the changes permanent?
Life happens and, depending on how you use your body everyday, some of the changes will probably require some kind of maintenance to be sustainable. Maintenance might refer to coming in for a session every now and then or, to take things to the next level, you might schedule an advanced series of 3-5 appointments less frequently. Maintenance also includes things you can do for yourself at home (which I will teach you) to bring attention to body use patterns and to remind yourself of the things we worked on together.
Some changes can be “permanent”. These may include new ways of moving which you will retain - like when you learned to swim or ride a bike. Also the new awareness that you will be developing and the relationship to your body will be something you can always come back to for the rest of your life. Additionally some symptoms respond completely and never come back. I’ve seen and experienced all these possibilities.
What do I wear?
During a session you will be walking and sitting as well as lying down. The most important thing, of course, is your comfort. That said, more access to the body allows for a more effective evaluation and treatment. Some people find it easiest to just wear their regular underwear. Soft shorts also work well and, for women, a sports top or camisole. I will always respect what is comfortable for you, and once you are on the table you can be covered by a sheet or blanket.
For Original Strength® sessions please wear something you can move in such as light pants or shorts and a t-shirt.
How long are the sessions and how far apart?
Rolfing sessions are 75 minutes, approximately. For many people, once a week or every two weeks works well. It is also possible to schedule more time between appointments.
How long have you been doing this?
I graduated from the Rolf Institute® of Structural Integration in 2009 and completed the Advanced Rolfing training in 2013.
Are there evening and weekend appointments?
Yes, appointments are available on Saturday and some evenings.
Will my insurance pay for my sessions?
I am sorry but probably not. It is often possible to get reimbursement from Health Savings Account plans. I am happy to provide you with a receipt you can submit to your HSA plan if that is the case.
