Questions & Answers

“Go around the problem; get the system sufficiently resilient so that it is able to change, and it will change. It does not have to be forced. It’s that forcing that you have to avoid at all costs.”
Dr. Ida P. Rolf

Why 10 sessions?

The traditional series of 10 sessions allows for a systematic balancing of the body in three dimensions and in gravity. Once the "sleeve" (more superficial layers) of the body has been released, work can happen at a physically deeper level. The understanding of both you and the practitioner of your structure and function also deepens allowing the focus of the work to be more precise and effective.

Do I have to do 10 sessions?

Each session is complete unto itself and it is always possible to do just one session or, for example, a series of three. Although one session or a short series can be very helpful, it will not compare with the experience of completing a full series.

What happens after I complete the 10 series?

It is common for changes in both alignment and body awareness to continue to develop for months after the end of a structural integration series. It is important to let these changes integrate.

After a period of time (3 - 6 months or more), some people return for a "post-10" series of 3 sessions. Another possibility is to return for occasional "tune-up" sessions to mitigate the effects on the body of the stresses of daily life. After accident or injury, additional work can help prevent chronic imbalances from developing.

What makes Rolfing® Structural Integration (SI) unique?

Structural integration directly addresses how gravity affects a body. Much as a contractor may realize that a crack in a wall may be due to a faulty foundation or a weakness elsewhere in the structure, the fundamental question is always: WHY are things the way they are? Using the perspective of Rolf Movement® integration, I will investigate with you how the way you use your body is affecting your sense of well being. You will leave with some simple practices for developing more efficient habits which can be easily incorporated into your everyday routine.

Does it hurt?

In the early days, Rolfing SI had the reputation of being very painful. The work has evolved a lot since then. While there may be some moments of intense sensation or a feeling of "it hurts so good", a session should feel wonderful. As your practitioner, I do not consider anything which causes clenching or resistance in the body to be beneficial to the process. I will ask for your feedback on the depth of the pressure and quality of touch and you will always be the one in control.

What do I wear?

During a session, you will be walking and sitting as well as lying down. The most important thing, of course, is your comfort. That said, more access to the body allows for a more effective evaluation and treatment. Some people find it easiest to just wear their regular underwear. Gym shorts also work well and, for women, a camisole. I will always respect what is comfortable for you, and once you are on the table you can be covered by a sheet or blanket.

For Rolf Movement sessions please wear something you can move in such as shorts and a t-shirt.

How long are the sessions and how far apart?

Rolfing sessions are 75 - 90 minutes. For many people, once a week or every two weeks works well. It is also possible to schedule more time between appointments. Somatic Experiencing® sessions are one hour. Scheduling varies by individual need and interest.

Are there evening and weekend appointments?

Yes, some evening and weekend appointments are available.
